About
This ridiculous hot dog appears in The Simpsons style cooking. It’s basically a hot dog buried under a sloppy joe style meat sauce cooked with bacon, peppers, BBQ sauce, and a splash of beer like Duff. The result is messy, heavy, and absolutely overloaded. You need both hands and probably a lot of napkins. Ingredients FOR THE MEAT SAUCE • 1 tbsp butter • 4 slices bacon, finely chopped • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 red bell pepper, finely diced • 1 small chili pepper, finely diced (optional) • 1/2 lb ground beef • 2 tbsp ketchup (or crushed canned tomatoes) • 1 tbsp yellow mustard • 2 tbsp BBQ sauce • 1/2 tsp paprika • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/3 cup beer (lager works best) FOR THE HOT DOGS • 2 beef hot dogs • water for boiling or oil for pan frying FOR ASSEMBLY • 2 hot dog buns, lightly toasted • extra mustard (optional) SERVING The hot dog should barely be visible under the thick meat sauce. The sauce should be chunky, glossy, and slightly smoky from the bacon and beer. Serve immediately while hot. Wrap the bottom half in parchment because this thing drips everywhere.

Recipe

  1. 1
Start the meat sauce. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tbsp butter. Add the chopped bacon and cook for about 4 minutes until it starts getting crispy and releases fat.
    Step 1
  2. 2
Add the diced onion and cook for 3 minutes until soft. Add the garlic, bell pepper, and optional chili pepper. Cook another 3 minutes until the vegetables soften and smell sweet.
  3. 3
Add 1/2 lb ground beef and break it up with a spatula. Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes until browned. Keep breaking it into small pieces so the sauce ends up loose and spoonable.
  4. 4
Add 2 tbsp ketchup (or crushed tomatoes), 1 tbsp mustard, 2 tbsp BBQ sauce, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp cayenne, and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir everything together and cook for 2 minutes so the sauces start coating the meat.
    Step 4
  5. 5
Pour in 1/3 cup beer and stir. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover with a lid, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Don't add too much beer or the flavor gets overpowering.
  6. 6
Cook the hot dogs while the sauce finishes. Boil them in simmering water for about 4 minutes or pan fry them over medium heat for 5 minutes until heated through and lightly browned.
    Step 6
  7. 7
Toast the hot dog buns cut-side down in a dry pan over medium heat for about 60 seconds until lightly golden. Watch them because they burn fast.
  8. 8
Place the hot dog in the bun, then pile a huge scoop of the beer sloppy joe meat sauce on top. Add a small drizzle of mustard if you want, then serve immediately while the sauce is hot.
