About
• 2 small ground beef patties (2 oz / 55g each)
• 1 slice American cheese
• 2 slices tomato
• 1/4 cup (15g) shredded iceberg lettuce
• 1 Tablespoon (8g) slivered onions (fresh white onion cut into strips)
• 1 Tablespoon (15ml) mayonnaise
• 1 plain soft burger bun
• Salt and pepper to taste
Recipe
- 1Prepare your fresh toppings first. Shred the iceberg lettuce into thin ribbons, slice a ripe tomato into two rounds, and cut a white onion into thin 'slivered' strips. This burger is all about the fresh produce, so make sure they are crisp and cold.
- 2Form the beef into two small, even balls (about 2 ounces each). Place them between parchment paper and press them down into thin, wide patties. They should be slightly larger than the bun to account for shrinkage on the grill.
- 3Lightly toast your plain burger bun in a dry pan over medium heat until it's warm and just starting to turn golden. Don't let it get crunchy—we want that soft, classic McDonald's texture.
- 4Crank the heat to medium-high. Sear the beef patties for about 60-90 seconds per side. Season them generously with salt and pepper immediately after they hit the pan. You're looking for a nice brown crust and juicy interior.
- 5Assemble the top bun (the 'crown'): Spread a healthy layer of mayonnaise across the toasted bun. Pile on the slivered onions, followed by the shredded lettuce and the two tomato slices. The mayo acts as a 'glue' to keep the veggies in place.
- 6Finish the build: Place a slice of American cheese on the bottom bun. Stack the two hot beef patties directly on top of the cheese so it starts to melt from the residual heat. Crown it with your prepared top bun and enjoy immediately.
